Surgery

Yeah, yeah... Surgery.
Nuff heard bout surgery already.
'Baddest' posting yet for me.
Anyway, let me get in2 details but b4 den, av u heard dat most surgeons R proud prob'ly cos they cut a lot of things in the body. I happened to be in Group D(group of d....). We were meant to rotate thru d 3 most dreaded divisions in Surgery I- Paediatric surgery unit, Urology unit, and the Gastrointestinal surgery unit in that order. On the first day of the posting, we were meant to be in theatre observing surgical procedures that were meant to be carried out by consultant surgeons or senior residents but due to reasons not disclosed to us, no surgeries were done on that monday. On hearing this, I left for my room happy cos my theatre linen was still hanging on the clothes line outside - wet.
To my dismay, however, I learnt that some of my groupmates had gone, without informing the rest of us, to report officially to the consultant of the unit-the only one at the time. I, however joined the rest of the group in the afternoon for the p.m round which is usually conducted by house officers.
The next morning, we were meant to have a ward round with our consultant surgeon, Dr Ogundoyin(FWACS) - a dark, not too tall man always wearing a frown on his face. On the round, he asked to see the students who reported to him the previous day and asked them to move aside after which he started asking us absentees why we were not present. When he got to me, I told him I didnt know about the meeting with him. Ofcourse, he felt it wasnt good enough an excuse. He however let it pass. Then it was my turn to present my patient. I had only done some shoddy clerking which when I presented to Dr, only fetched me a 1 hr percussion on history taking. At the end of my presentation, he promised not to ask anyone else to present bcos he felt we were too inept to do so. Surgey posting, though very stressful still remains my most challenging and fun-filled posting as it was very eventful and I was the butt of so many jokes. Mr. Olaopa and Dr J.K.Ladipo made my surgery posting one I wouldnt forget in a long time to come. For now, I have till late 2009 b4 my next surgery posting and I simply cant wait.
